When a person slips, trips or otherwise falls, a common but often uninformed consensus is that the person was inattentive, or sometimes in the case of older individuals, was simply exceeding their physical capabilities. While this is sometimes the case, there are many details of construction that although appear to be subtle, can cause a person to lose their balance and often suffer traumatic injury as they fall to the ground. Over the years, Building Codes and other documents which set forth building standards have developed construction details and required their use to greatly reduce the probability of such falling type occurrences and injuries. Proper attention to details such as lighting, uniformity and stairs and risers, adequate surface friction and the use of hand rails are all safety features which are required, and if neglected may contribute directly to a slip, trip or fall.
We have examined the number of these cases including stair falls, and slips or trips on many types of services both Interior and exterior. Notable among these were several cases which occurred at casino hotels in Atlantic City, and a case at Disney World in Florida. We maintain a current library of Building and Maintenance Codes and the specifications for design for Americans with Disabilities.
